THE WEATHER

Is as Old as Time, But This Design is Brand New

We have all seen a weather app. Rectangles neatly stacked on top of one another. Information reading top to bottom. Could there be another way? This project was an exercise in pushing the boundaries of possibility to find out. My goal was to uncover an outrageous yet usable solution for presenting the week’s weather forcast.

NO IDEA IS TOO OUTRAGEOUS

At Least To Put On Paper

The first step in my process is crazy eights. I divide a piece of paper in to eight equal-size rectangles, set a timer for 10 minutes, and get the pen moving. Each rectangle becomes a design, and the timer allows me to belay judgment and get all of my ideas on the page without time to let my left-brain interfere. The result is eight unique and outrageous low-fidelity sketches and something to work from.

I then turn to my computer and explore each design a little further using design software. The goal is to layout where the information might appear in each design and uncover what works and what doesn’t work in each design.

Next, I circle or highlight the elements I like in each design and use them to create a higher-fidelity mock-up.
